Peter Pan Live! is the live television special and new production of the 1954 musical adaptation of Peter Pan, first broadcast on NBC on December 4, 2014. Craig Zadan and Neil Meron were executive producers.
The live special was narrated by Minnie Driver, who was also cast as the adult Wendy. The Making of Peter Pan Live! aired on NBC on November 26, 2014 and received 3.02 million viewers. The production was developed after The Sound of Music Live! proved a commercial success for NBC in 2013. It was sponsored by Walmart.
The story is told from the point of view of an adult Wendy, who narrates at various points throughout the show but otherwise, is the same plot as the past production of the musical version.
Some changes were made for this version of the show, including the addition of new songs with lyrical adaptations by Amanda Green, the daughter of Adolph Green, who, with Jule Styne and Betty Comden, added some songs for later productions, including "Never Never Land".
The songs included the Captain Hook song "Vengeance", an adaptation of "Ambition" from the Styne-Comden-Green musical Do Re Mi, a Mrs. Darling song "Only Pretend" adapted from "I Know About Love" also from Do Re Mi, the Peter and Hook duet "A Wonderful World Without Peter" adapted from “Something’s Always Happening On The River” from the Styne-Comden-Green musical Say, Darling.
In addition, the song "Ugg-a-Wugg", which contained racially insensitive lyrics, was rewritten into a new song entitled "True Blood Brothers." Also, "Oh My Mysterious Lady", a song written with Mary Martin in mind, has been cut. The telecast reinstated the song "When I Went Home," which had been written for but was cut from the original 1954 production. Like The Sound of Music Live!, Peter Pan Live! was shot at Grumman Studios in Bethpage, New York.
The character of Tinker Bell, traditionally portrayed on stage by a small spotlight, was created using computer generated imagery from ChyronHego and the flying effects were provided by Flying by Foy, as in past productions.
